STUDENT CENTER – MPR. This past Thursday, Election Committee announced the results from the Student Government elections. The Senate election had been [restarted last week](https://thewildcatgazette.com/fall-senate-election-restarted-special-election-opens) due to policy violations – this restart nullified all already-cast votes, forcing students to recast their votes and delaying the beginning of the already-late new Senate’s term.

Senate elections typically occur in the first few weeks of the fall semester, ensuring that a fresh student Senate representative of the student body can begin working before the end of September. The first time that the newly elected Senate will hold a meeting this semester is October 15th, seven weeks into the semester.

Election Committee Chair Maximus Azzarello did not announce how many students had voted in the election, stating only that the required five percent threshold to end the election how been met. Election Committee is not required to report this number and it historically has not been announced. However, students affiliated with Election Committee were seen soliciting votes just ten minutes before the election closed, suggesting that the threshold (roughly 150 students) was was just barely met.

Although there are 15 seats available in the Senate – three for each class – only ten students ran for Senator. (More about The Wildcat Gazette’s coverage on the Fall 2026 Senate election, including details on the candidates, can be found [here](https://thewildcatgazette.com/voting-officially-opened-for-senate-elections).) Out of these ten students running, only seven were elected.

Both of the candidates for Freshman Senator, Fila Sovis and Snayder Vargas, were elected, winning 61% and 50% of the vote respectively. The rather crowded race for Sophomore Senator saw Emili Petrovski win with 35% of the vote, Zoe Pieri win with 38% of the vote, and incumbent Senator Matthew Rose win with 33% of the vote. Senator Adem Kapo who was running for reelection as Sophomore Senator did not win. (To be elected in a contested race, candidates only need to receive a simple majority of votes to be elected, even if it less than half of votes cast.)

Seerat Fatima, who briefly served as an acting Senator last spring, was elected Junior Senator with 74% of the vote. The other candidate running for Junior Senator, Michael Mulvaney, was not elected. Sources close to Michael stated that he had been removed last-minute from the election, though it was not clear what had occurred. Michael was still listed on the ballot as a candidate for Junior Senator not even 12 hours before the election has concluded; Election Committee Chair Azzarello made no mention of any candidate having been removed from the Senator election during his report.

Hay Marn Lwin, running alone for Senior Senator, was elected with 79% of the vote. No student ran for any of the three Graduate Senator seats.

In the special election, which had the positions of Treasurer, Secretary, Chief Justice, College Council Student Representative (and briefly, [Vice President](https://thewildcatgazette.com/election-update-vice-president-position-removed-from-ballot)), only two students ran. Former Senator Aidan Pena ran for Treasurer; Alexandra Payne ran for Secretary.

Both were elected to their aspired offices, with Treasurer-Elect Pena winning 80% of the vote, and Secretary-Elect Payne winning 83% of the vote. As Executive Board members require two weeks of training before they can assume their positions, it is believed that they will not officially begin their terms until October 22nd.
